Girl Skateboards was formed in 1993 after a group of skaters left World Industries to go it alone, the brand is owned and run by Mike Carroll and Rick Howard as well as director Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Where The Wild Things Are, Her). The main reason cited for them setting it up was to give them a future, something to do when they were done with actually skating.
Back then, 25 years old was past it in skateboarding terms. Ironically, Carroll and Howard are still ripping to this day and their footage is still as eagerly anticipated as any of the younger team members. The original team alongside Rick and Mike consisted of Jovontae Turner, Guy Mariano, Jeron, Wilson, Rudy Johnson, Tim Gavin, Tony Fergusson and Sean Sheffey. (Rudy Johnson and Tim Gavin later went on to set up DVS shoes). The present team roster is: Eric Koston, Brandon Biebel, Rick McCrank, Guy Mariano, Sean Malto, Corey Kennedy, Mikemo Capaldi, Jeron Wilson, Mike Carroll and Rick Howard.
Girl have always had a strong graphic image based around the Girl logo which comes from the symbol used on women’s bathrooms. The original logo was designed by Andy Jenkins who is still their in-house artist. They also feature the work of many talented guest artists through their ‘Art Dump’ project.
